Durban - A 25-year-old woman has been charged with child neglect after she abandoned her baby on the pavement at a taxi rank in the city on Wednesday.
The one-year-old girl was found by hawkers near the Ndwedwe taxi rank in the Durban CBD.
They immediately took the child to the Durban central police station.
Police spokesman, Captain Khephu Ndlovu, commended the hawkers for assisting.
“When police got to the city centre the hawkers pointed out the woman, who wasn’t far from where she had left her baby, and she was arrested,” Ndlovu said.
The woman is believed to be from Mayville, Durban.
Ndlovu said the child, who was in good health, had been taken to a place of safety and a police investigation was under way.
He said there were many organisations that were willing to find homes for children.
Ndlovu said the woman, who has been charged with child neglect, would appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court. – Daily News
