Three killed in KZN plane crash

Durban - Three people were killed when a light aircraft crashed near Nagle Dam outside Cato Ridge on Thursday, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

The aircraft crashed in a bush near the dam, said Netcare 911
spokesman Chris Botha.

The dam is located about 50 kilometres inland from Durban.

Paramedics, firefighters and police were on scene.

ER24 said the incident happened at around 5:30pm.

After arriving on scene, three paramedics and a firefighter set out on foot to locate the aircraft, said spokeswoman Vanessa Jackson.

"After about an hour of walking up the mountain through dense bush, they arrived at the crash site where they found the wreckage of a light fixed wing aircraft extensively damaged..."

She said it was impossible to determine the gender or ages of the three as they had sustained extensive burns.

"It is not clear...what caused the aircraft to crash, but locals  who were the first to find the wreckage said that it appeared that black smoke was coming from the plane before it crashed." she said.

Police spokesman Colonel Vincent Mdunge said he would comment shortly. - Sapa
