Johannesburg - An unknown man has been scamming the unemployed with promises of jobs at the Gauteng health department if they pay him a fee, the department said on Monday.

The man allegedly operated in Ekurhuleni, Soweto, and the Vaal area, offering jobs at the new Natalspruit Hospital after it became operational, spokesman Simon Zwane said in a statement.

The fees started at R3 000 for the position of a cleaner and increased with higher job positions.

“As the department, we would like to warn job seekers against this practice. If and when the department has to fill vacancies, posts will be advertised and selections made from the applications received,” Zwane said.

He said no one would be employed from the gate of the hospital and no fees would be charged for a position.

The department urged victims of the scam to file complaints with police. - Sapa
