A man accused of killing ANC councillor Wandile Mkhize appeared in the Ramsgate Magistrate's Court on Thursday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
Kwanele Cedric Hlongwa,40, would be back in court on September 5 for a bail application, Colonel Jay Naicker said.
He was arrested in Umlazi, Durban, on Tuesday. A 9mm pistol was found in his possession.

He was charged with the murders of Mkhize and his friend Nhlakanipho Shabane, 24.
Mkhize was shot dead in a drive-by shooting near his home in Manaba, Margate, on July 30. Shabane, who was with him at the time, died later in hospital.
