Johannesburg - The Legal Resources Centre (LRC) will represent the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and some victims and their families at an inquiry into the recent shooting in Marikana.

“The SAHRC is uniquely placed to provide valuable assistance to the commission,” the LRC said in a statement.

“The LRC has already engaged forensic experts and pathologists to collate the evidence that will be presented to assist the commission in carrying out its work.”

The LRC legal team would be led by human rights lawyer George Bizos.

President Jacob Zuma appointed the three-member judicial commission of inquiry to probe the deaths of 44 people in protests associated with the Lonmin Platinum mine in Marikana, North West.

Retired Supreme Court judge Ian Farlam will chair the commission. The other commissioners are senior advocates Bantubonke Tokota and Pingla Hemraj. - Sapa
