A 16-year-old drowned at Umdloti beach in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday, paramedics said.
The girl got caught in a rip current shortly after 5pm, said Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha.
“Life guards raced to her assistance and managed to pull the girl to the beach, she had stopped breathing and they immediately started CPR,” Botha said.
Paramedics arrived to find the girl in a critical condition and placed her on a ventilator.
They attempted to revive her for an hour using resuscitation techniques.
“Despite the efforts from the emergency personnel she tragically was declared dead on scene,” Botha said. - Sapa
