Durban - Metrorail commuters stoned Groutville station in KwaZulu-Natal and set a car alight in protest over service delays on Thursday, the company said.

A railway line through Groutville had to be closed due to a technical fault at the station, spokeswoman Thandi Mkhize said.

The subsequent delay angered commuters, who set alight a vehicle and damaged equipment. Police and Metrorail security were called in to restore calm.

None of the staff sent to repair the fault were injured during the protest. Full service had been restored to the station. - Sapa
