The body of a man, allegedly killed by striking mineworkers from Anglo Platinum, has been found near Rustenburg, North West police said on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old man's corpse was found near Jabula Hostel on Monday, after he was killed, apparently on the previous day (Sunday), Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.
“It is alleged that the deceased and his two friends were driving on the road... when they were blocked by a group of people believed to be Anglo Platinum mineworkers.”
It was believed the miners accused the men of breaking the strike and attacked them with weapons, including pangas.
Ngubane said that according to the information at his disposal two of the people in the car managed to escape; one was stabbed in his hands.
Earlier, Ngubane said the strikers could be responsible for torching four vehicles, found burnt between section one and two of Khomanani.
“It is alleged that a group of mineworkers who are on strike at Anglo Platinum were seen gathered around these areas,” said Ngubane.
No arrests had been made.
In another incident, six vehicles were damaged and two Chinese shops were burnt down in Boitekong, near Rustenburg.
“The incidents occurred (on Monday) night in a shopping centre near the Jabula hostel,” said Ngubane.
A case of malicious damage to property and arson was being investigated.
It was unclear if this attack was also linked to strike action. - Sapa
