A Chatsworth man has been arrested after allegedly
being caught with thousands of rands worth of heroin concealed in his underpants.

Yasheen Mohanlall, 25, was arrested by members of the Metro police projects unit and the SAPF Chatsworth intelligence unit on Tuesday. He was stopped while driving a cream Opel Rekord, allegedly transporting 500 straws of heroin - commonly known as sugars - to the Bayview area.

A Metro police spokesperson, Senior Superintendent
Joyce Khuzwayo, said that this had led the team to search Mohanlall's home in Bedford Road, Bellair, where they had found 1 000 mandrax tablets and R7 900 in cash. The drugs, the money and the car - valued together at R70 000 - were seized.

Another police spokesperson, Colonel Vincent Mdunge, said yesterday that Mohanlall had made his first appearance in court. Mohanlall's arrest came after another man, Zakhele Mphyaka, 25, was caught last week allegedly selling 500 straws of heroin.

Khuzwayo said Mphyaka had been granted R50 000 bail, but his associates had failed to pay it and he was now awaiting trial in Westville Prison. "The quick money made by those dealing in these drugs is resulting in an increasing number of teenagers becoming social misfits, stealing money and jewellery from their parents to feed the habit," said Khuzwayo.
