The courageous little dog that was tied to a railway track and left for dead has taken her first steps - minus a paw.

Lucky Lucy, the white-and-black terrier cross breed is now living with 20 other dogs at the African Tails animal sanctuary with the woman who saved her from death.

The pregnant dog was rescued when Richelle Graham and her partner Andre Verbiest, along with another concerned animal lover, found Lucy tied to a rail track under the R44 bridge near Wellington two weeks ago.

Vets dropped everything to operate on the traumatised dog but were unable to save
her six puppies.

Lucky Lucy was then taken to African Tails to recover from her surgery and on Friday she was given the all clear and even took her first steps.

Richelle says Lucky Lucy has terrible nightmares about her terrifying ordeal but calms down as soon as she realises she is safe.

"She has terrible separation anxiety if she can't see me," says Richelle.

"Twenty other dogs are also a lot for her to deal with, but she is making a good recovery."
