The mother of a nine-year-old boy who was allegedly raped by a Belgian national says the accused was treated like a relative prior to the incident.
Gunter Gys, 41, of Crestholme, near Hillcrest, pleaded not guilty to the rape and sexual assault of the boy, who cannot be named, at the start of the trial before Pinetown Regional Court Magistrate Bilkish Asmal last year.
The incidents allegedly took place at Gys's home in 2008. He had been working in the province for a welfare organisation, which is based in Holland, at the time.
On Sunday, the boy's mother testified that Gys had offered to help take care of her children when he discovered that she was ill.
