Johannesburg - A convicted rapist was sentenced to 11 life terms by the Waterval Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, Limpopo police said.

Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said Zimbabwean-born Moses Hungwe waged a “reign of terror” between 2007 and July last year.

He was convicted on 11 of 19 counts of rape, assault and robbery.

“The unremorseful Hungwe used to prey on women collecting water, firewood or working in the fields in Waterval, Tshitale, Levubu and Vuwani villages,” Mulaudzi said.

The women were aged between 18 and 87.

Hungwe was linked to 19 rapes through DNA evidence, but several women chose not to testify.

Limpopo police commissioner Lt-Gen Thabethe Simon Mpembe welcomed the sentence.

“This sentence is a victory not only for the SA Police Service, but for all vulnerable women and children in the country.” - Sapa
